Löwe Alex, Zebra Marty, Giraffe Melman und Nilpferddame Gloria versuchen mit Hilfe von Lemuren-König Julien und dem Pinguin-Quartett zurück nach Hause, in den New Yorker Zoo, zu kommen. Doch sie stranden in Europa. Ihre chaotische Odyssee führt sie von einem Spielkasino in Monte Carlo zu einem Wanderzirkus, der die ideale Tarnung für sie bedeutet. Doch erst einmal muss man sich mit dem Personal arrangieren, insbesondere Alex und Tiger Vitali kommen nicht so gut miteinander aus. Sich tolle Nummern aus zu denken und sie in der Manege zu präsentieren, scheint im Vergleich dazu eine leichte Übung zu sein.
