Sportlich, flink, temperamentvoll, unfassbar clever und stets dem Motto "Geht nicht, gibt's nicht" verpflichtet – das ist die 16-jährige Vaiana, Tochter des Motunui-Häuplings Tui. Seit ihrer Geburt hat Vaiana eine ganz besondere Verbindung zum Ozean, weshalb es sie ziemlich stört, dass sich ihre Stammesgenossen mit ihren Booten nie über das nahe Riff hinaustrauen, das die Insel umschließt. Doch als ihre Familie schließlich Hilfe braucht, setzt Vaiana die Segel und reist los. Unterwegs trifft sie auf die Halbgott-Legende Maui, um den sich unzählige Mythen ranken und der ganze Inseln aus dem Meer hieven kann. Begleitet von dem dämlichen Hahn Heihei und dem niedlichen Hausschwein Pua wandeln die Häuplingstochter und Maui auf den Spuren von Vaianas Vorfahren und treffen auf furchterregende Kreaturen...
