Die junge Vaiana ist die Tochter des Stammeshäuptlings einer polynesischen Insel. Als die Fischer ihrer Heimat keine Fische mehr fangen, erfährt Vaiana, dass diese Plage durch den Halbgott Maui verursacht wurde, der das Herz der Göttin Te Fiti gestohlen hat. Vaiana begibt sich auf eine Reise übers Meer, um Maui, der sich in verschiedene Tiere verwandeln kann, dazu zu bewegen, das gestohlene Herz zurückzugeben.
