16. März 1978: Vor der nordbretonischen Küste, nahe dem Ort Portsall, läuft der Supertanker "Amoco Cadiz" auf Grund. An Bord befinden sich mehr als 220.000 Tonnen Rohöl - und nach der Havarie ergießt sich die gesamte Ladung ins Meer. Die Katastrophe ist nur das Ende einer ganzen Kette unglückseliger Ereignisse, an deren Beginn eine defekte Ruderanlage steht. Bei schwerer See gerät das Schiff zusehends außer Kontrolle. Kapitän Pasquale Bardari und seine 44-köpfige Crew bitten zwar um Hilfe, doch der Rettungseinsatz gerät wegen technischer und nicht zuletzt finanzieller Probleme ins Stocken.
